CANAN (1970, Istanbul) belongs to a generation of Turkish artists that express social commitment and a global outlook in their critical attitude to the Turkish societal system, and combine a subdued sense of humour with forceful provocation and aesthetic reflection. In her universe the naked body appears in indecent ways, dolls commit sexual assaults and torture victims describe the physical and psychological pains they have experienced. Canan defines her art using a feminist slogan from the 1970s “private is political,” but she does not designate her work as feminist. The artist’s first solo exhibition in Kibela presents a selection of her video works.

Cinema — Train — Travel — Knowledge — Memory — Perception, these are terms from descriptions of video films by Heiko Daxl and Ingeborg Fülepp. In a nutshell, one could say: it all concerns vision. How has human vision, or better saying visual perception, changed since the invention of cinema and the later developments of all the forthcoming image machines? There is a reason, this program starts with the film “Le Cinema — le Train”, where the filmmakers make the analogy between the views out of the train windows while travelling, as Victor Hugo was describing it (1837) and the experience of film: “The flowers on the edge of the fields are colour spots, or better saying red and white stripes; there are no dots any more, everything turns into stripes. Crop fields become yellow streaks, clover fields appear as long green braidsŠ”

More InformationVJ FEST ISTANBUL is an annual international video-music festival. It is devoted to artists’ works and projects in new media, electronic art, music and visualization that take image and sound into a complete merge. The festival’s main objectives are presenting new experiments in the field of the live audiovisual art to Istanbulers as well as making contributions to the development of VJing in Turkey. Festival is a platform to share knowledge about this new profession with audiovisual concerts, performances, live cinema, electronic music, VJ/DJ sets, lectures and workshops for 5 days.
The conception of a book starts by folding a page into double. To fold, creates a space that is to be (dis)organized. To use this space for display, photographs for example, is a way to make the artwork touchable and easily exchangeable.
Some experiments, notably topic printed matters, will be presented during the show in Apartman Project. Around 9 pm, a musical autobiography of Laurianne Bixhain, will be presented.
