Art School MAA invites an artist, writer or curator for a one-month residency stay in Helsinki for the month of November 2009.
The residency-guest has the possibility to propose a project for the annual light and sound art festival in Helsinki, the Forces of Light (www.valonvoimat.org), and is expected to contribute to the teaching program of ‘X-OP European Studies’ with a single lecture or a workshop. X-OP European Studies is a special international study program of Art School MAA, commencing in September 2009, with a focus in critically thinking of Europe, European Union, and possibilities and challenges of internationalism for visual artists.More Information
The European Capital of Culture, Vilnius, Lithuania hosted the ArtVilnius09 fair. Kibela attended the fair as the only Slovenian gallery, presenting the works of the sculptor Boštjan Novak and the painter Jure Zadnikar. What they have in common is their decision to opt for classical art tradition. While the address by contemporary art is in the language of new media strongly integrated in the world of technological images, the two authors remain faithful to the traditional media. And it is within this context that opting for traditional iconography and paying attention to formal questions assumes particular value and importance. However, despite the traditional attributes, the works of both authors are marked by a particular deviation and a hint of contemporariness The integration of the traditional and the contemporary then preserves the required tension and attraction towards the viewer.

Project space: Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien, Berlin – Germany
Istanbul-Off -Spaces exhibition and event in Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien is meant to draw attention to a phenomenon that has arisen in recent years: the increasing number and growing influence of project groups and independent non-commercial art spaces in Istanbul. In Istanbul, art project spaces act as important locations for social discourse and discussions about civil society. As a result of increasing internationalization, but also as a consequence of growing independence and burgeoning self-awareness, locations, publishers, magazines and players in the field of contemporary visual arts have established themselves as outstanding elements of social and political discourse in Istanbul. The activities in Berlin are aimed at initiating a dialogue between these projects and their protagonists offering a presentation platform in Berlin.Stéphane Bauer and Sencer VardarmanA Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien Exhibition, supported by the CapitalCulture Fund, conceived and planned by Stéphane Bauer and Sencer Vardarman.
